Milvus Brewery: Craft Passion and Nature in the Heart of Basilicata
In the picturesque village of Sarnelli, a hamlet of Avigliano in the province of Potenza, Milvus Brewery was born, a craft brewery that strongly expresses the culture and nature of Lucania. Founded in 2020 by Lina Lucia and Vito Samela, former homebrewers, the brewery stands out for a philosophy that combines the production of high-quality beer with a deep respect for the environment and local wildlife.
The name 'Milvus' is inspired by the red kite (Milvus milvus), a bird of prey symbolic of the Lucanian territory, a tangible sign of the founders’ attachment to their place of origin. Every beer produced by Milvus Brewery is a tribute to the ornithological world: the labels, designed by English artist Matt Sewell, tell stories of different birds, inspirations reflected in the names and characters of their creations.
Beers and Commitment to Nature
Among the most appreciated offerings are:
- Blue Tit: a Pale Ale inspired by the Blue Tit, with a fresh and aromatic taste.
- Puffin: a Bitter with a balanced flavor, dedicated to the Puffin.
- Bullfinch: an intense and full-bodied Strong Ale.
- Eleonora’s Falcon: a unique Italian Grape Ale brewed with Isabella grapes, offering a fruity and original note.
Milvus Brewery is characterized by a careful selection of ingredients and a strong nod to traditional English and American beer styles, creatively reinterpreted. But what truly makes this brewery special is its concrete commitment to environmental protection: the hops used come from fields cultivated in the very habitat where the Lesser Kestrel lives, another bird of prey that inhabits the Lucanian countryside. This synergy between beer production and the conservation of local wildlife demonstrates a sustainable and responsible vision.
Lina and Vito wanted to create not only quality beers but also a place that respects and enhances the surrounding landscape. Outside the brewery, nest boxes are hung as a concrete expression of their will to protect biodiversity and encourage the presence of wild birds.
Milvus Brewery thus tells a story made of passion, territory, art, and care for nature, offering visitors a multisensory experience that goes far beyond simple tasting. Every sip becomes a journey into the heart of Basilicata, among mountains, open skies, and the song of birds, to discover an authentic Italy deeply rooted in its natural and cultural heritage.
