Jacobus Microbrewery: Tradition, Spirituality, and Inclusion in the Murgia of Bari
In the heart of the enchanting Murgia region of Bari, in Bitetto, the Jacobus Microbrewery was born, a unique project that combines historical roots, spiritual values, and a strong social commitment. Located inside the ancient Blessed James Convent, founded in 1432 by the Friars Minor of the Observance, the brewery tells a story of artisanal passion and respect for the territory.
The name Jacobus is a tribute to Blessed James Varingez, known as 'Illyricus,' who lived for over forty years in the convent dedicating himself to monastic life and caring for the poor. A cook in the convent, he inspired the founding of the microbrewery in 2022, when the Solidarity Mug Association transformed the old kitchens into a craft brewing laboratory. This initiative arises from the collaboration between the Friars Minor, the lay members of the Secular Franciscan Order, and the Sons in Paradise Association, with the goal of promoting socially useful activities and inclusion.
A Craft Beer That Makes a Difference
The philosophy behind Jacobus goes far beyond beer production: it is a concrete commitment to social inclusion and the enhancement of local artistic heritage. During the pandemic, the project offered job opportunities to people with intellectual disabilities, actively involving them in the production and packaging phases under the expert guidance of master brewer Arcangelo Fazio. This inclusive approach creates a collaborative and enriching environment, which also contributes to funding the restoration of artworks and historical assets present in the convent and the surrounding territory.

The brewery’s logo depicts a friar at work, symbolizing the deep connection between spirituality and the art of brewing. This image recalls one of the miraculous events linked to the life of Blessed James, paying homage to the brewing and fermentation process that brings each bottle to life.
Jacobus is also a meeting place where the community can come together, learn about, and support a solidarity project. In the small convent shop, it is possible to purchase craft beers and participate in organized events, creating a lively dialogue between past and present, tradition and innovation.
