Walser Duarf: the craft microbrewery in the heart of the Aosta Valley

Walser Duarf is a craft microbrewery located in Issime, in the picturesque mountain village of Ceresole, on the left bank of the Lys stream, at the foot of the majestic Monte Rosa. Founded in 2023 by Alberto Consol, this brewery takes its name from the local töitschu dialect, where 'Walser Duarf' means Walser village, a tribute to the Walser people who, coming from Valais, settled in these valleys during the Middle Ages.

The brewery’s logo is an homage to traditional Walser architecture: it depicts the “stadel,” an original 16th-century rural building found right in Ceresole, characterized by iconic mushroom-shaped columns and a roof made of a large stone disk. This detail recalls the deep cultural and historical roots that Walser Duarf aims to celebrate through every beer produced.

Walser Duarf’s beers: alpine tradition and quality

Currently, Walser Duarf offers two craft beers distinguished by balance and character, the result of careful and rigorous processing:

  • Funtrunkieeru: a light Kölsch-style beer, fresh and delicate, with slight sweet and fruity notes. Its 5% alcohol by volume makes it perfect for accompanying moments of relaxation in any season.

  • Pirubeck: an amber beer inspired by Düsseldorf Altbier, characterized by moderate bitterness and hints of biscuit and toasted bread crust, also at 5% alcohol by volume. The name is associated with the local legend of The Fairy of Pirubeck, a popular tale that enriches this beer’s character with a touch of magic and mystery.

Production takes place in a 2.5-hectoliter brewing room, supported by three fermenters with a total capacity of 1,500 liters. Each beer is made following traditional methods, without filtration or pasteurization, and using only high-quality ingredients: pure mountain water, barley and wheat malt, selected hops, and yeast. This attention ensures an authentic craft product that preserves the natural taste and freshness typical of local productions.

Walser Duarf is also an example of innovation supported by targeted investments. Thanks to funding obtained from the Aosta Valley Rural Development Program, it was able to restore and renovate a pre-existing historic building, transforming it into a modern brewery that combines tradition and technology.

The brewery is open to the public during the following hours, offering the possibility to purchase beers directly on-site: Friday afternoons, and Saturday and Sunday both mornings and afternoons. This allows visitors to have a direct and authentic experience, discovering production secrets up close and immersing themselves in the unique atmosphere of the Aosta Valley Alps.

Walser Duarf undoubtedly represents a reality of excellence in the Italian craft beer scene, skillfully combining respect for local traditions with a keen focus on quality and authenticity—elements found in every sip of its beers.
